A roller operator must be capable of operating self-propelled, rubber tired, sheep foot and vibratory rollers to compact various surface treatments for rough finishing, including operation on earth, subgrade, sub base, shoulder materials, and stone cover.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to operating self-propelled, rubber tired, sheep foot and vibratory rollers to compact various surface treatments for rough finishing, including operation on earth, subgrade, sub base, shoulder materials, and stone cover.
  • Past experience, two years preferred, and/or comparable training in the operation of a roller on an asphalt/finish crew.
  • Adequate range of motion and ability to manipulate levers and maneuver equipment.
  • Ability to oil, grease, service and adjust equipment daily as required.
  • Adequate range of motion and ability to lift, pull, push into place or remove hoods or compartment covers over roller engine, transmission and other compartments for service and lubrication as required.
  • Ability to withstand heavy vibrations and equipment impact when operating a vibratory roller and various surfaces, and ability to withstand moderate vibrations and equipment impact when operating other rollers on various surfaces.
  • Ability to roll base course, earth, subgrade, subbase, shoulder materials and stone covers to desired compaction.
  • Ability to climb in and out of the roller using handholds and footsteps as necessary.
  • Sitting during equipment operation for up to four (4) consecutive hours at a time.
  • Ability to inspect roller equipment, including necessary bending, stooping, kneeling, turning and climbing as required for proper review.
  • Adequate range of motion and peripheral vision is necessary for the safe and effective operation of equipment.
  • Operation of roller equipment on unpaved and uneven construction sites and in congested working environments.
  • Ability to load and unload equipment from flatbed carriers.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with other workers at and around the job site.
  • Ability to walk and maneuver on even and uneven surfaces at the plant and construction sites.
  • Ability to withstand various environmental conditions, including but not limited to, normal summer outside temperatures with the heat index occasionally in excess of 100 degrees, the combined effect of heat and humidity during outside summer work, possible low winter outside temperatures, and routine rain
  • Ability to withstand various airborne particles located at outside construction sites, including dust, sand, dirt and pollen.
  • Ability to withstand various gases, vapors and fumes within acceptable OSHA/EPA limits produced by construction equipment, solvents and asphalt located at outside construction sites.
  • Ability to perform and timely and productively execute tasks and assignments.
  • Ability to meet weekly attendance requirements, often averaging ten to twelve hours per day.
  • Ability to meet other attendance requirements, including overtime hours, weekend work, holiday work, night work and shift assignments as necessary.
  • Ability to work effectively with fellow workers and the public.
  • Ability to withstand loud and continuous noises from various construction equipment within acceptable OSHA limits.

MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Equipment fueling.
  • Ability to perform small repairs to roller equipment.
  • Occasional lifting and pulling up to an estimated 70 pounds.
  • Attendance at staff/safety meetings.
  • Possession of a valid and current Florida driver’s license.
  • Ability to shovel, sweep and perform general “housekeeping” at and around work areas.
  • Ability to assist in the adjustment of screed extensions.
  • Adequate depth perception and vision to assist in laying string line.
  • Ability to assist in the flagging and signaling of traffic at and around construction sites.
